The 20 countries that export the most food article is based on figures provided by OEC (Observatory of Economic Complexity) for 2022. In 2022 food was the 9th biggest commodity in international trade and worth a total of $762 billion.

We rank the countries from 1st down to 20th in terms of the volume of food exports from each country. The percentage of total trade is given for each country along with an outline of the main food exports for each of the 20 countries that export the most food.

20 Countries that export the most food 1-5

United States – 7.24%

The United States is both the largest exporter and largest importer of foods in the world. The country exports a diverse range of foods but the most important commodities are grains, meats and soybeans.

Germany – 6.61%

Processed foods, various meats and dairy products are Germany’s main food exports. Germany exports food to nearly every country in the world.

Netherlands – 5.85%

Netherlands has placed a strong emphasis on high tech farming and sustainability to ensure efficiency in food production. The main food exports of the country include vegetables, meat and dairy products. Netherlands is also the world’s largest exporter of flowers.

France – 5.84%

In you are in the market to buy wine, cheese or pastries then France can be a supplier for you. France is famous for quality foods due to its excellent climate for agriculture.

Italy – 5.05%

Pasta is of course a major food export for Italy but the country also exports wine and olive oil.

China – 5.03%

Despite having the second largest population in the world China is still the 6th biggest food exporter. China exports include rice, fruits, vegetables, soybeans and an increasingly large range of processed foods.

Brazil – 4.42%

Soybeans is the most important food export from Brazil but the country also exports sugar, coffee, corn and fruit juice.

Poland – 3.21%

Poland has become a major international producer of poultry products. Dairy products are also a major export for Poland.

Belgium – 3.2%

Belgium is famous for beer, chocolate, waffles and pastries and so it is no surprise that these foods are among the countries main exports. Belgium also exports fruits, vegetables and dairy products.

Thailand – 3.2%

Food exports from Thailand include sugar, rice, chicken meat, tuna fish, seafood, cassava and fruits.

Mexico – 2.92%

Mexico food exports are worth around $11 billion a year and include coffee, avocados, tomatoes, seafood, fruit and vegetables.

Spain – 2.9%

Olive oil, wine and fruits are the top food exports from Spain. Spain is the world’s biggest supplier of olive oil with around half of all olive oil production.

United Kingdom – 2.71%

The United Kingdom still has a high percentage of food exports to the European Union despite no longer being a member. Those food exports include meat, dairy products and processed foods.

Argentina – 2.17%

Sugar cane, wheat, maize and soybeans are the main food exports from Argentina.

India – 1.94%

India exports many food products including rice, spices, sugar, food oils, coffee, tea & cashews. Some restrictions on the export of rice are currently in place due to high domestic prices.

Indonesia – 1.66%

Soybean, wheat, milk powders, fruits, beef and beef products & dairy products are the key food exports for Indonesia.

Singapore – 1.6%

Flavourings, sauces, noodles, ready to eat meals, sausages, confectionery and chocolate make up the very developed food export industry which imports most ingredients and processes them to end products.

Turkiye – 1.54%

Tomatoes are maybe the most famous export from Turkiye which has the perfect climate for tomatoes growing. The country also exports wheat, sugar beets, milk, poultry and vegetables.

United Arab Emirates – 1.39%

Dates, fish and dairy products are the major food exports of United Arab Emirates but the country also exports fruits, veg and processed foods. UAE has used high tech farming techniques to become a major food exporter despite its desert terrain.

Vietnam – 1.16%

A growing player in world food export markets Vietnam exports rice, coffee, seafood, fruit, vegetables and some processed foods.
