Business humor – what to use it for
Business humor can be a powerful tool in your marketing strategy.
Business humor can be used to achieve the following objectives:
- Use humor to sell
- Use humor to raise awareness
- Use humor to make a specific point
- Use humor to deal with negative publicity
Humor differs from country to country so using humor in international marketing is more of a challenge but I have seen Mr Bean for example in many countries of the world so humor can be universal.
Business humor can be used in social media campaigns, TV advertising, branding, printed media, events, exhibitions and business websites.

Business humor – using humor to gain attention
On the first example I suspect that Absolut did not get the marketing wrong at all, it was all a great ploy to get some publicity and awareness.
If you come from the USA town of Passmore and you decide to open a company selling gas then what else could you call it. I am sure it got some attention.
A great piece of business humor on example three, unforgettable business name for sure and I think it will appeal to the target market.
Example 4 is something that blackcat360.com uses. Gets a smile and some attention.
Actual I bought that album.
Some seasonal humor that I am sure helps get the message over.
Business humor – humor when it wasn’t intended
Sometimes humor in business is not intended at all. Here are some great examples of when businesses did just great it wrong but they did succeed in giving everyone a great laugh.
More examples of this type can be found in the articles I gave links to towards the top of the page.

Business humor – Great TV ads using humor
TV advertising frequently uses business humor to build awareness and sales of brands. These three campaigns are amongst my favorites.
Ameriquest Insurance campaign called ‘Don’t judge too quickly’ is designed to convey the key message that all claims will be dealt with in a fair and unassuming manner. I love these ads, so clever, well written and creative.

The compare the meerkat ad campaign for comparethemarket.com really needs no introduction. An awareness building campaign all based around the most unusual of invented and unlikely characters.

The famous 3 frogs campaign for Budweiser uses business humor to keep the idea of Budweiser in peoples minds when buying beer in the supermarket or the bar. I remember seeing this for the first time and thinking ‘what the heck is this an ad for’. Its success created a whole generation of ads for Budweiser.
