Let us begin with our 10 great beers options in Europe.
Tyskie, Poland: A personal favourite, a strong Polish beer of 5.2% alcohol by volume. Just a great tasting, refreshing beer that goes down so nicely. Brewed now in the Netherlands but originally from the Tychy brewery in Poland.
Slavutich, Ukraine: Slavutich is maybe the best beer in the world! Of course we all have our own opinion on the best beer but believe us Slavutich takes a lot of beating for taste and satisfaction. Brewed in Kyiv with an ABV 4.4% the brand is now owned by Calrsberg but is a fine old Ukrainian lager.
Feldschlosschen, Swizterland: the name of this beer translates to ‘small castle in the field’ and it is one of several beers produced by a brewery of similar name in Rheinfelden. It is the Feldschlosschen Original that we would recommend, with ABV of 5.2% it is quite strong and is light yellow in colour and goes well with pizza or fondue.
Skopsko, North Macedonia: Someone who knows a thing or two about beer recommend Skopsko to me but I had a Star Trek moment and tried to order Spocksko. The waitress rolled around laughing before pointing out my mistake. A great beer, would truly recommend, 4.9% ABV and 90 years of heritage leading to 60% market share in Macedonia.

Julbrew – Gambia: Julbrew, the main beer brand of Castal Group in Banjul. I discovered this absolute gem when on holiday in sunny Gambia some years ago and its wonderful taste still lives in the memory. A great beer to quesnch the thirst after a very hot African day but it will do the job superbly well in a hot climate anywhere. 4.7% ABV.

Kazbegi, Georgia: Georgia is a country more famous for wine than beer but this beer is an undiscovered gem – Kazbegi! Named after the tallest mountain in Georgia (the 2nd tallest in Europe) Mount Kazbegi, it is a giant of a beer. A really full flavour and a great flavour, the strength of the beer is also spot on at 4.9% ABV. Brewed by Global Beer Georgia.
Efes, Turkiye: The perfect beer for a hot and sunny day at the beach, a relaxing, superb tasting light, refreshing beer. Brewed by Efes Beverage Group with an ABV of 5% it is the biggest beer brand in Turkiye with around 80% of the market. It has a sweet taste and goes down so well on those hot days so be careful as it is stronger than you think.

Xirdalan, Azerbaijan: Discovering this beer really made my trip to Baku, I originally ordered Efes but was persuaded by the waiter to try Xirdalan, great advice. It is always good to try a local beer on a trip to any country and Xirdalan did not disappoint. A light colour beer of medium strength, great taste and very refreshing. ABV 4.8%

Bucanero, Cuba: Cuba is more famous for rum than beer but Bucanero is a gem of a beer. Bucanero is quite strong at ABV 5.4% but its bigger brother Bucanero Max is a monster at 6.5% ABV and should be drunk only in small quantities. Both Bucanero and Bucanero Max taste great have a wonderful kick.
