The economy of Ukraine was less severely affected by Covid 19 in 2020 than had been originally expected and the economy is now projected to recover in 2021 with GDP growth in the region of 3.8%. This economic growth will be largely down to strong performance of the agricultural sector and the food processing industry. Government policy of switching from total lockdown to adaptive quarantine has also been successful.

The Ukraine economy continues to suffer from the corruption problems of the oligarch system and further economic and judicial reforms are needed to boost growth in future years. A more widespread vaccination system is also required to ensure that the economy and healthcare system are more resistant to the pandemic.

A 2021 budget deficit of a 5.4 is projected. The increase in minimum wages will push the public wage bill to over 11 percent of GDP but will also help to offset the loss in production caused by Covid 19.
